IBM's Power6 Processor

All of Intel's newest processors are based on the LGA 775 socket. These processors may have one to four cores and do many new tricks that the older generation chips weren't capable of. The best of these tricks is that the newer processors run extrememlmy cool. The new Core™ microarchitecture provides more power at lower voltages which means a cooler computer. design innovations include Wide Dynamic Execution, Advanced Smart Cache, Smart Memory Access, and Advanced Digital Media Boost. Wide Dynamic Execution increases execution efficiency. Advanced Smart Cache is a multicore optimized cache to reduce latency when accessing frequently used data. Smart Memory Access takes the ambiguity out of typical out-of-order instruction by providing the execution cores with the ability to load data for instructions that are about to execute before all previously stored instructions are executed. Advanced Digital Media Boost is a feature that significantly improves performance when executing Streaming SIMD Extension (SSE/SSE2/SSE3) instructionsin order to accelerate a broad range of applications, including video, speech and image, photo processing, encryption, financial, engineering and scientific applications.

AMD processors have a reputation for quality and speed, and until lately they held the record for being the fastes machine a PC gamer could get. Though they have lost the speed crown, they are not accepting defeat. The new Athlon 64 FX Dual Core processor is produces benchmarks almost as good as Intel's finest, and wins a race here and there. AMD processors have had an on-die memory controller for quite a long time now, and that memory controller is one of the reasons AMD has succeeded so greatly with previous iterations of its processors against Intel. The Hyper Transport bus provides up to 8 GB/s of bandwidth for high-speed I/O communication. These dual core processors have 1,024KB of cache per core, with 64KB L1 instruction cache and 64 KB of data cache per core. One hindrance for AMD currently is the lack of a true quad core component. But that it about to change with the advent of the Direct Connect Bus architecture and the upcoming 4 core Opteron. Their current competition to Intel's QX6700 isn't even a truly quad core system, but rather a dual core system with two processors.
